From the Head of Lower School

Mark L. Hansen

Last week certainly proved to be an interesting one with the arctic blast followed by the snow we awakened to on Friday morning.  I am confident your children all enjoyed their unexpected 5-day weekend, but we now look forward to a 5-day SCHOOl week this coming week! We also have many events taking place in the Lower School.

On Tuesday at 8:15 am  Grade 1 students are performing Wing It,  a musical about birds.  We ask parents to sit in the center section as  students will sit on the left and right sides.

There will be two Strings Concerts on Wednesday. At 8:15 am the Level 3 and Grade 5 strings students will perform.  Level 1 and 2 will perform the same day at 4:00 pm. Parents are again asked to sit in the center section.

On Friday  our Chinese parents are preparing a Chinese New Year Fair for students in Grades 1-5 in the Dining Hall.  Students will rotate through many activities related to Chinese culture.  For our younger students, activities have been planned inside their classrooms.

Our next Parent Coffee will be February 19 from 8:30-9:30 am in the fireside of the Dining Hall. The topic is Outdoor Winter Fun With Your Children.  It will be presented by our 3YO Associate and Naturalist, MS. Grace Gordon.  Please join us.

The next Parent Conferences will be held on:

  • Wednesday, February 27 from 3:40-5:40 pm
  • Thursday, February 28 from 3:40-8:00 pm
  • Friday, March 1 from 8:00 am-3:00 pm (no school on Friday for students)

Conference sign-up information will be sent home soon.

Our next Parent Book Club selection is  “The Strength Switch” by Dr. Lea Waters.  We will meet on February 28 from 8:30-9:30 am in the Huntington Room.  We will discuss Part 1 (Chapters 1-4) at the meeting in February.

This week’s parenting article is from CNN and is entitled, More screen time for toddlers is tied to poorer development a few years later, study says.”  It can be found following this link.

On February 6, PACA will hold an information-packed Forum at 8 am in the Dining Hall. Here are the topics we will touch on:
Technology

Ever wondered what it is like to step onto a Viking Ship? Chances are your child has!! Join the excellent Technology leads at Columbus Academy as they wow us and give us insight into the technology and experiences our children explore from lower school to Upper school.  At Columbus Academy, technology is not overlaid upon the curriculum, it is embedded throughout the curriculum. It is not a subject to master, nor a shiny new object to possess, but a tool to use to get where the students need to go. Click here to explore more if you cannot make it to the Forum!
