Desserts in the Dining Hall
As you may be aware, students in the Lower School currently receive a dessert on Wednesday and Friday each week. This is usually some sort of cookie, brownie, or ice cream. Beginning next week (September 24), we will only be offering a dessert on Fridays. The reason for this change is that for young children, having a dessert in the middle of the day and returning back into the classroom creates problems as students are affected by this sugar in their system. In addition, in reviewing the results from the Parent Survey I sent out in June, many parents expressed concern about the amount of sugar and desserts students eat during the school day. As you know, birthday celebrations are held at the end of the day in classrooms so these sugary treats do not affect the ability to focus afterwards as the children go home. While I know this will be disappointing for many students, we will encourage students to eat the plethora of fresh fruit that is available every day in the Dining Hall which complements the healthy food our students enjoy each and every day at Academy. Thank you for your support and understanding.
Parent Book Club – Join us on Wednesday!
Our first selection will be, “Voice Lessons for Parents: What to Say, How to Say It, and When to Listen” by Dr. Wendy Mogel. The book can be found in public libraries and online book stores. For our first session, we will discuss chapters 1-4 only. We will meet on Wednesday, September 26 from 8:30-9:30 am in the Dining Room on the fireside.
Drop Off and Pick Up Concerns
We continue to observe parents on cell phones while dropping off and picking up children in the car lane. This is very unsafe and if you must be texting or on your phone at this time, please park your car and come in to pick up / drop off your child. Safety is important to all of us and the car line is a busy and hectic place and not one where your attention is diverted in any way. Thank you for ensuring ALL children are safe.

SCHOOL PHOTO RETAKES (Wednesday, Sep 26):
If your child needs a photo retake (2 of my 3 look drunk in their photos so we’re retaking), just return the entire original package that you received your photos in earlier this year and make sure your child knows to participate in the retake (I’m going to email my kids’ teachers letting them know we need retakes).
CA YOUTH BASKETBALL GRADES 4-6 (registration deadline Wednesday, Sep 26):
The Parents and Guardian’s Association of Columbus Academy (PACA) is pleased to present CA Youth Basketball as a sporting option for 4-6th grade students (girls and boys). If your CA student is interested, they may try-out to play in one of the two leagues in which we participate: Central Ohio Basketball Association (COBA) or JCC / Bexley Recreation League (JCC). (Please note that CAJB, the Academy’s intramural basketball program, is separate from this basketball program and will still be available for 1st-5th graders on Sundays in November and December through ASA. Look for details in October and in the Winter ASA Brochure.)
APPLE-PICKING SERVICE EVENT (Sunday, Sep 30):
Join the Columbus Academy Service Board for the very popular Apple-Picking Service Event at Lynd Fruit Farm in Pataskala from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 30. Pick a bag for your family and one (or more) to donate to local food pantries. Again this year, prices are $15 for small bags and $25 for large bags. Families from all divisions are encouraged to attend! Please enter the orchard near the Corn Maze (entrance on Morse Road, just west of 310 traffic light). Follow the Columbus Academy “Service Event” signs and Lynd greeters to our white tent within the orchard; this is the specific area where fellow CA families will be picking. After you purchase the apples at the farm exit, upper school students will be waiting to collect your apple donation. Last year, 890 pounds of apples were collected by Academy families and donated to the Faith Mission homeless shelter. HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH CELEBRATION (Sunday, Sep 30):
Hispanic Heritage Month began September 15, and Columbus Academy is excited to celebrate the contributions of Americans whose families come from Mexico, Spain and the Caribbean as well as Central and South America. Join ¡HOLA! on Sunday, Sep 30 from 4-7pm in the Lazarus Courtyard for a wonderful celebration of Hispanic culture and cuisine. There will be a DJ, dancing, food, games, and family fun! CHARLIE DAVID DINNER (Friday, Oct 12):
The 36th annual Charlie David dinner is scheduled for Friday, October 12 from 5pm-7:30pm in the dining hall. This event helps fund our middle and upper school athletic programs and student club organizations at the school. It’s a casual, family-friendly, pre-football-game (CA plays Bloom Carroll at 7:30pm) tailgate for all ages. City BBQ cuisine (vegetarian options available) will be served in the dining hall, over 100 silent auction items will be available for purchase, and upper school students organize activities for our youngest Vikings in the school gym. Tickets and event sponsorships can be purchased at the door on online here. To volunteer at the event, please sign up here. This is the perfect event for every Viking to attend. Over 800 student athletes thank you in advance for your support!
