THOUGHTS FROM MR. HANSEN
The Viking Code
As mentioned on Thursday evening at our Back-to-School Night, a committee was formed last year to review our guidelines for expected student behavior in the Lower School. This committee of Academy faculty met regularly and – using our already established Responsive Classroom guiding principles and CARES – the following Viking Code Mission Statement was created:
Our Viking Code Mission establishes a safe and inviting learning environment that fosters optimal opportunities for all academic and social growth opportunities for all students. To uphold this standard, each student must adhere to expectations according to our Mission Statement and our Responsive Classroom approach to teaching and learning. Columbus Academy faculty and staff will utilize sound judgment when working with students who are not meeting these expectations, seeking responses that are developmentally appropriate and that demonstrate dignity and respect for others.
From this, we developed a concrete Discipline Policy with four different levels of infractions along with appropriate consequences. This is in place and already being used this school year. It provides both students and parents a clear process. Here is a link to the Viking Code.
In addition, we use age-appropriate “Think Sheets” for students to complete at Level 1 and Level 2 to ensure they are involved in the process and provide them an opportunity to reflect on their choices.
We are very fortunate to have a caring student body that respects rules and quickly learns from them when they are broken. As a faculty, we often talk with students about failure and the importance in it as well as learning and growing from our mistakes, and this certainly applies to student discipline.
I would like to acknowledge and thank the following faculty who volunteered to serve on the committee and provide their experience and insight into the development of this comprehensive plan: Deanna Robeano, Anne Ramsey, Sue Figlik, Donna Saide, Miranda Bring, Elizabeth Sinclair, Taylor Cherry, Lisa Spolter, Lauren Shuneson, Brelle Farrenkopf and Paul Kegelmayer.
If you have any questions, please contact me or any of the faculty who served on this committee.
Parent Book Club
The Parenting Book Club will continue this year. Our first selection will be, “Voice Lessons for Parents: What to Say, How to Say It, and When to Listen” by Dr. Wendy Mogel. Some will recognize this name as she is also the author of “The Blessing of a Skinned Knee”. The book can be found in public libraries and online book stores. For our first session, we will discuss chapters 1-4 only. We will meet on Wednesday, September 26 from 8:30-9:30 am in the Dining Room on the fireside. Here is a link for additional details about the book.
