(LS) Lower School Welcome Back!

Hello Lower School Parents,

As we say a melancholy goodbye to summer and an enthusiastic hello to another school year, we would like to introduce ourselves as the 2018-19 Lower School Lead Parents. Candice Singleton and I (Nikki Bundy) will be heading the Lower School Leadership Team (LSLT) this year. We will be sending out a (hopefully brief) weekly email on Sundays to keep you informed about important Lower School events, dates to remember, etc.

Here are the important dates and reminders for the beginning of the school year:

Monday, August 20, 4:00 – 6:00pm
Bring your entire family to this always popular event! Classrooms in the Lower School will be open from 4:00-5:00pm for children to get a “sneak peek” at their new classrooms and meet their teachers before heading out to the Ice Cream Social at the bus circle beside Academy Hall. Parking promises to be a nightmare (as you veteran families already know), but think about the ice cream waiting!

Viking Corner will be selling school items during the Ice Cream Social, so please be sure to stop by.

Tuesday, August 21
Classes begin at 8:05 am – please plan on arriving early to allow your little Viking(s) plenty of time to get settled into their new classrooms without rushing.  Volunteers will be positioned throughout the Lower School to help students find their way.

Please stick to the parking spots versus the carpool line or fire lanes to park. There will be lots of little pedestrians, so drive with caution. The first few weeks of carpool are slow, so please be patient. It gets better, we assure you!

The first day of school is also Picture Day, so make sure the kids bring their smiles and don’t spill breakfast on their brand new shirts!

Thursday, August 30, 7:00 – 8:00pm
Another popular back-to-school event! The evening will begin with opening remarks from Mark Hansen and his goals and vision for the upcoming school year.  Afterwards, you will move to your child’s classroom for a brief introduction of what’s in store for the next nine months.  This is a great way to kick off the academic year!

Friday, August 31
Lower School Parent-Teacher Conferences are being held Friday, August 31 from 8:00am – 3:45 pm. There will be no school that day. CASE will be available during your scheduled conference time. Instructions for signing up for conferences will be sent soon.

For everything “CA”, please visit the Viking Corner Store located in the dining hall area.
Monday, August 20: During the IceCream Social, the Viking Corner  will be set up on the sidewalk for your convenience from 4:00 – 6:00 pm.
Tuesday, August 21: Store will be open 12 – 4:00pm
Wednesday, August 22: Store will be open 8am – 3:30pm
Thursday, August 23: Store will be open 12 – 4:00pm

Columbus Academy’s CASE (Children’s After School Experience) is an after-care program for students in grades PreK – 8 that allows for pickup anytime before 6:00 p.m.   Registration is available now for drop-in on quarterly usage.   Registration forms will been sent home via email and can be found on the CA website.

After School Activities (ASA) are after-care options in addition to our CASE program for children in grades PreK-6.  This year’s FALL ASA programs will begin the week of September 10 with returning favorites as well as exciting new options.  A print copy of the newly formatted brochure will come home in backpacks the first week of school and are available now through the CA website.  If you have any questions regarding registration, please contact the Special Programs office at programs@columbusacademy.org or 614-509-2267

For parents of 1st – 5th graders, please read the letter below from Scott Gurwin, LS dad-extraordinaire who has volunteered to lead our wonderful Junior Basketball experience:

Dear Lower School Parents

CAJB is an intramural youth basketball program that has been part of our fall lower school activities over the past 15 years. It is parent administered and depends on parent volunteers to coach the young Vikings.The program is split into basketball skill development and games. We are looking for someone to take the lead as well as parent volunteer coaches so that we are able to maintain this program. It is a seven week commitment with the sessions starting in late October and ending prior to winter break. In the past there have been 2 sessions starting at 1 pm on Sundays.
I hope you will consider this volunteer opportunity as it is a great way to spend your fall Sundays and an opportunity to help the CA basketball program. Please contact me for any additional information or if you are able to participate in CAJB.

NEW PACA Website! Check it out here (www.vikingparents.org). The biggest this year is that all of the information we send to you via email (on a bi-weekly basis at the Division level starting today and on an as-needed basis at the grade level, and room levels as we get into the school year) or on Facebook will actually live on this site (or eventually other social media channels – see diagram below). There are static pages and also blog posts (think frequent updates). Each Division, Grade and class in the Lo9wer School has it’s own page with a “feed” – which has specific information and updates just to the targeted audience. You can always check out the entire PACA blog which can give you a view of all activities happening throughout the school. Look for the links to your grade on the homepage or the dropdown “Class news.”  This is a new initiative and mode of communication so we are sure to make improvements as the year progresses. Please feel free to provide feedback on how we are doing by sending an email to cavikingparents@gmail.com with the subject line “Website Feedback” along with the specific grade if applicable.
