(LS) Lower School News 9/13/2020

Dear Lower School Parents and Guardians,

We hope you had a wonderful weekend and are looking forward to starting our first full week.
Just a reminder, at this time most communication will be coming from either Mr. Hansen or your teachers. Here are this week’s updates.

1. Social Justice Conversation Parent Ed Opportunities: September 16 & October 21

Dear Parents,

We want to make you aware of an exciting, two part Social Justice series hosted by The New Albany Community Foundation.

The first Conversation on Social Justice with Dr. Eddie Glaude, Jr. and moderated by NBC4 anchor, Darlene Hill, will take place next Wednesday, September 16th at 7:00 pm. Access to the virtual room will begin at 6:45.

It is FREE & OPEN to the public. You must register to receive your Zoom link by visiting https://newalbanyfoundation.org/programs/the-new-albany-lecture-series/.

The second Conversation on Social Justice, featuring Dr. Ibram X. Kendi and Michelle Alexander will be held on October 21st at 6:30 p.m. Please mark your calendars.

As we work to gain a better understanding of what this year will allow PACA’s Parent Education Committee to offer, we will keep you – our parent community – posted on other events that are open to the public, as well as provide information regarding helpful resources, podcasts, experts, etc…to help our kids navigate and succeed in these unchartered times.

In the meantime, please feel free to reach out to us with any suggestions or questions.

Be well,

Melissa Kass (P’21, ’19)

Jennifer Salopek (P’24)

Joyce Simson (P’08)

2. Join SEED (Seeking Educational Equity and Diversity)

How we see the world, decide which values to uphold, understand the unfamiliar, raise our kids – all these depend on our personal histories, inform who we are, and guide whom we want to be. Parent SEED brings together CA parents and those caring for CA students who are interested in looking at issues in diversity, inclusion, and multi-culturalism (such as racism, class, poverty, gender identity, disability rights, etc.), through their own eyes and those of fellow parents. Through a series of 7 meetings, enhanced by selected readings, videos, and speakers, we discuss topics important and sometimes uncomfortable, in a confidential and safe setting. Until further notice, SEED meetings will take place via ZOOM.

Parent SEED’s first meeting this school year is scheduled for Wednesday, September 30. Subsequent meetings are planned for October, November, January, February, April, and May. We will meet from 9-10:30am.

To participate or for further information, please contact Parent SEED leader Joyce Simson P’08, jrs@ix.netcom.com, (614) 554-9238.

Upcoming Key Dates

9/28 – Fall Holiday (No School)
10/9 – Charlie David Dinner (Virtual)

From the Charlie David Dinner Committee: We’re very grateful that our 800+ student-athletes can play this year! Although CA’s annual athletic fundraiser, the Charlie David Dinner, will take place virtually this year, our student-athletes still need our support. The committee is working hard to create a stellar silent auction that will go live in early October. Stay tuned for more details in the upcoming weeks. In the meantime, if you have a silent auction item to offer, please email charliedavid.paca by September 20th, 2020, with item details and value. Thank you in advance for your generosity and support of our student-athletes!
