Lower School Weekly Update 2-17-19

Hello Lower School Viking Parents!

I hope everyone is enjoying a wonderful 4-day weekend!  In honor of President’s Day, I thought I would include this link to some fun facts about this federal holiday.  May it help educate, entertain, and occupy some time (that might otherwise be spent bickering about who took the last graham cracker) until school mercifully starts again on Tuesday.

Sign ups are open for scheduling Parent Teacher Conferences and all families received an email last week with sign-up directions.  Please make sure you schedule a time both with your child’s homeroom teacher and co-curricular teachers to learn more about your child’s progress from all of his/her classes. Conferences will be on: February 27, February 28, and March 1.  Please note that on Friday, March 1 there is no school for students.

Our next Parent Coffee will be this Tuesday (February 19) from 8:30-9:30 am in the Fireside of the Dining Hall. The topic is Outdoor Winter Fun With Your Children.  It will be presented by our 3YO Associate and Naturalist, Grace Gordon.  Please join us to learn about all of the wonderful ways you can spend time with your child(ren) outside during the winter months.

Our next Parent Book Club book will be “The Strength Switch” by Dr. Lea Waters.  Here is a short video and interview with Dr. Waters and also a  link to her website.  We will meet on Thursday, February 28 from 8:30-9:30 am in the Huntington Room. We will discuss chapters 1-4.

This week’s parenting article is from New York Metro Parents and is entitled, The Importance of Summer Camp for Kids and Teens.”  It can be found following this link.  It is an interview with Dr. Michael Thompson, the author of “Homesick and Happy” which is a wonderful resource for parents that speaks about the benefits of sending your child to sleep-away camps.

Thought for the Week

Please donate your old paper-based egg cartons, rinsed milk cartons and magazines to be recycled for crafts during CA’s Earth/Arbor Day celebration in April. Collection bins (clear, plastic storage containers marked E&A celebration) will be set up in various locations in the Lower School. You or your child can drop off your carton and magazines in the collection bins!

Questions? Contact: Ruth Giglio (giglior@columbusacademy.org) or Alison Gorsuch (gorsucha@columbusacademy.org).

Our second BoxTop round up is in full swing!  Keep cutting out your BoxTops and sending them in as soon as possible. We are getting ready to submit another set of BoxTops at the end of February. Everyone can help by collecting these valuable rectangles!  The fourth grade is checking expiration dates and counting BoxTops to raise funds for next year’s Kids 4 Kids service project.  The money from BoxTops helps fund the purchase of perishable foods for the 32 local families supported through this project.  This year we have already raised $325.60 through our BoxTop collection program.  Let’s keep this valuable endeavor going by sending in your BoxTops soon!  BoxTops can be found on:
PaperMate products
Nestle Pure Life water
Annie’s Organic
Reynolds Wrap/foil
General Mills cereals
Finish dishwashing detergent
Green Giant vegetables
Fiber One
Nature Valley
