From the Head of Lower School

Mark L. Hansen

There were lots of wonderful examples of learning and celebrating this past week in the Lower School. We enjoyed several strings concerts from both our new and experienced string musicians, the Grade 3 Little Dribblers performed at OSU during halftime, the Planet Fair took place in Science classes, Grade 1’s musical, Wing It was beautifully performed, and on Friday our Chinese parents held a Chinese New Year’s Fair with lots of games, food, and activities for our students to enjoy. I also see many projects and activities being worked on during the day throughout the Lower School and realize what a comprehensive and engaging  program our children experience at Academy!

The next Parent Conferences will be held on:

  • Wednesday, February 27 from 3:40-5:40 pm
  • Thursday, February 28 from 3:40-8:00 pm
  • Friday, March 1 from 8:00 am-3:00 pm (no school on Friday for students)

Conference sign-up will open at 7:00 PM on Monday, February 11 and remain open until 7:00 PM on Wednesday, February 20.

I would like to remind everyone that during drop-off from 7:30 am onwards that the driver always stay in the car.  We are outside to assist with bags, instruments, and your child(ren). In addition, if you are arriving before this time and need to come into the building, you must use the parking lot.  Please do not park in the drop-off lane as this makes it very difficult for others dropping off.

Our next Parent Coffee will be February 19 from 8:30-9:30 am in the fireside of the Dining Hall. The topic is Outdoor Winter Fun With Your Children.  It will be presented by our 3YO Associate and Naturalist, Grace Gordon.  Please join us.

Our next Parent Book Club book will be “The Strength Switch” by Dr. Lea Waters.  Here is a short video and interview with Dr. Waters and also a  link to her website.  We will meet on February 28 from 8:30-9:30 am in the Huntington Room.

This week’s parenting article is from The Greater Good (UC Berkeley)  and is entitled, How to Help Your Kids Learn to Stick With It.”  It can be found following this link.

CALLING ALL CA FAMILIES TO COLLECT BOXTOPS!
Our second BoxTop round up is in full swing!  Keep cutting out your BoxTops and sending them in as soon as possible. We are getting ready to submit another set of BoxTops at the end of February. Everyone can help by collecting these valuable rectangles!  The fourth grade is checking expiration dates and counting BoxTops to raise funds for next year’s Kids 4 Kids service project.  The money from BoxTops helps fund the purchase of perishable foods for the 32 local families supported through this project.  This year we have already raised $325.60 through our BoxTop collection program.  Let’s keep this valuable endeavor going by sending in your BoxTops soon!  BoxTops can be found on:
